Mel started exhibiting with his group "Madrugada" during the early 90s. He co-founded the group with other advertising artist friends in Manila. Madrugada meaning "dawn" or beginning. Coined by his friend Cris Villanueva, a member of the Salingpusa group of artists. Madrugada started as a group of artist friends in an advertising firm (Avellana and Associates) who would like to create art as a means to pass time during free time. Now the group found the reason for their existence. They represent commercial artists who produce "art" outside of their job. They proved that commercial artists too have the capacity to produce true art.The group shows their artworks once a year in galleries around Manila. Madrugada is still intact and moving on.

Mel had his first solo show in 1999 in Malate, Manila titled Bodega ni Mel meaning Mel's warehouse. He thought of the term because he does his art in his garage which represent the warehouse. The show was a success. This show christened him as an "official" artist according to him. He had been reluctant to call himself an "artist" before this show. The reason he said was that making art for him is just like being anybody else like a janitor or a doctor. He's just doing his thing. The word "artist" scared him because of the weight people put into the word. For Mel all artists are the same. They're out to tell their story. It is the language of the senses. It's all the same feeling, we're just howling he said.

Mel's second solo show was held in April 2001 in Makati, Manila. This was titled Bodega ni Mel 2. He recently had 2 group shows in San Francisco (Gallery Route One - Far from Home, May - June 2001 / Philippine Independence Day show at Pacific Bell building in San Ramon, June 2001) with his newly formed group "Agunyas" along with England Hidalgo.
